Your Baby Shower - The Basics
by Jan Rossi
Giving a baby shower for close friends, relatives and loved ones is always a cherished experience for everyone involved. However, there are some potential situations where planning a baby shower can cause quite a bit of stress. In order to help you sidestep some of these things, there are some basic guidelines that need to be addressed. Below are some routinely asked questions and things to consider:
Hosting the Baby Shower - So…who’s supposed to host? It is usually common for just about anyone to host your shower. Often you see several people combining their efforts to organize the get together including sisters, mothers, friends and other relatives can (and should) be given a rol. This helps to make the organizing go smoothersmoothly and have your baby shower announcementsinvitations made on time.
When is it Thrown? - two or three months prior to the due date is a pretty good guage to use for the actual event. You’ll probably want to start the planning a few months or so prior to the actual shower date to accommodate the plans and travel arrangements for those you invited. Planning ahead also gives time to establish a baby registry.
Invitations - There are several options for your anouncements from Designer Stationery to Handmade to homemade. Getting these done after the dates have been nailed down is probably the first thing you’ll want to do.
New Baby Parties - These are showers that are held after the baby is born. Though not too common, these types of parties usually happen if the mom to be is out of the country or incapacitated in some way prior to giving birth. These normally take place one to three months after the baby is born.
Shower Location - Most normal baby showers are held at the home of the host but can really be held anywhere. Restaurants, parks, hotels, churches and private rooms are all suitable for your shower. Some of the things to consider when throwing your party at an “alternative” location are of course, costs and the potential for bad weather.
Surprise Baby Showers - If you’re looking for something a bit less “traditional”, a surprise baby shower can add some added excitement. It is smart to keep in mind however if you are planning a surprise event, that it can be a bit of a test for some moms-to-be and especially those who are dealing with difficult pregnancies.
What About Men? - Though not a traditional guest at baby showers, men are being added more and more. This will likely change the tone that you might find at a traditional shower but, depending on the group, can be a fun way to go. Some prefer to have the guys arrive for only the second half of the shower after the girls have had time to be with the pregnant mom.
